Indian vice captain Virendra Sehwag must be a very happy man, seeing the awful performance of Indian cricket team, sans him. The Dhoni-Sehwag controversy proved too heavy for the Indian team, and Dhoni ultimately admitting that a player of Sehwag's calibre cannot be matched or replaced.
Sehwag, unfit to play was the story Dhoni conveyed to the media, to take his personal grudge against the Indian vice captain. Dhoni thought, eliminating Sehwag from the playing 11 would not hamper the Indian team, a decision which proved fatal.
So why did Sehwag's absence make such a big difference
1) A player of Sehwag’s calibre cannot be matched or replaced, admitted Dhoni. India really missed the hard hitting capabilities and experience of Virendra Sehwag at the top. People like Gambhir flourished in the company of Sehwag, who would take all the pressure off the batsman at another end. With no Sehwag in the team, poor Gambhir and Rohit Sharma had to step in Sehwag’s shoes, which was literally impossible. None of the players could play their natural games, and succumbed to pressure.
2) Rift in the Indian team: When a team captain and vice captain fight, there is bound to be groupism. People like Ishant Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, who play under Sehwag for Delhi, must have their feeling towards Sehwag. During a rift, the level of commitment from players drops and the team does not bond well, even if they pretend to do so. So the Indian cricket team lacked commitment, and captain Dhoni was already under severe pressure from the media, regarding Sehwags omission.
I am sure the failure of Indian team must have irked Sehwag, but at the same time failure of captain cool to take "Team Indian" forward, would have given him immense please. Sehwag was forced to return to India, which was a major embarrassment not only for the Indian vice captain, but also for the entire team.
